I'm making my own dog food!

So, many of you know that I make and bake my own dog treats. I love doing this and being

able to share it with all of you. It's great to know that those little treats are home made, natural and super healthy for my pups. So, I have been researching and talking with my vet because I want to start making all of my dog's meals. I wish I could make and share with all of you but they have to be refridgerated. So, instead I am going to share my recipes. I'll be putting them up as I make them and my dog's approve.

It is super simple to make your own food for your dogs. They need protein, veggies, grains, fruit and calcium. Check with your vet before switching your dog especially if they have allergies or any other health problem. Also be sure to slowly wean them off of whatever they are currently eating or you will really upset their digestive system. You also need to switch up the meals so they get a little of everything in their diet. I have six meals and I run through all of them in order throughout the week.

You'll also need to speak to your vet about the amount of food to feed your dog. Every dog is different and you will need to figure out what is best for your dog.

So, here is recipe number one. My dogs gobbled this one up and were in the kitchen for about 5 minutes afterwards, licking their bowls free of any tiny morsel that may have been left behind. I made a huge portion of this and have it stored in the fridge and freezer in meal sized portions for my two.

Meal #1:

*box of whole grain rice

*bag of frozen corn, peas, carrots (important... do NOT feed your dog corn on the cob. They can easily choke on the cob pieces)

*diced, cooked chicken pieces

*1/2 can sodium free chicken or beef broth

*1/2 package of blueberries

*6 tbs cottage cheese

1. Cook rice a little longer than the directions call for (extra couple of minutes)

2. Add vegetables and cook an additional minute

3. Mix in all other ingredients and serve at room temperature

4. Refridgerate or freeze leftovers and nuke meals just long enough to bring to room temperature.

Please Read if you are a pet owner!

Even if you don't have a pet, please pass this to those that do. Yesterday one of our dog agility friends experienced a tragedy and wanted me to pass a special message along to all of my dog loving friends and family.

Please tell every dog owner you know. Over the weekend the doting owner of two young lab mixes purchased Cocoa Mulch from Target to use in their garden. They loved the way it smelled, and it was advertised to keep cats away from their garden.
Their dog Calypso decided that the mulch smelled good enou
gh to eat and devoured a large helping. She vomited a few times which was typical when she eats something new but wasn't acting lethargic in any way. The next day, Mom woke up and took Calypso out for her morning walk. Half way through the walk, she had a seizure and died instantly.

Although the mulch had NO warnings printed on the label, upon further investigation on the company's website, this product is HIGHLY toxic to dogs and cats.
Cocoa Mulch is manufactured by Hershey's, and they claim that It is true that studies have shown that 50% of the dogs that eat Cocoa Mulch can suffer physical harm to a variety of degrees depending on each individual dog). 'However, 98% of all dogs won't eat it.'

This Snopes site gives the following information: http://www.snopes.com/critters/crusader/cocoamulch.asp

Cocoa Mulch, which is sold by Home Depot, Foreman's Garden Supply and other garden supply stores, contains a lethal ingredient called 'Theobromine'. It is lethal to dogs and cats. It smells like chocolate and it really attracts dogs. They will ingest this stuff and die. Several deaths already occurred in the last 2-3 weeks. Just a word of caution, check what you are using in your gardens and be aware of what your gardeners are using in your gardens.

Theobromine is in all chocolate, especially dark or baker's chocolate which is toxic to dogs. Cocoa bean shells contain potentially toxic quantities of theobromine, axanthine compound similar in effects to caffeine and theophylline. A dog that ingested a lethal quantity of garden mulch made from cacao bean shells developed severe convulsions and died 17 hours later. Analysis of the stomach contents and the ingested cacao bean shells revealed the presence of lethal amounts of theobromine.

It's beginning to look a lot like Christmas

And I've started making stockings! What pup shouldn't be a full member of the family and have their own personalized stocking hanging from the mantle on Christmas morning? And at only $12 these personalized stockings are a steal. Grab yours today while I still have time to get your dog's name on it. And don't forget a bag of treats to stuff it with.

Trashy box!

Okay... there are all kinds of promotional opportunities floating around there and my friend Jess and I decided to start our own. Beginning in October we are going to offer our first round of "trashy boxes." You'll probably find a good sampling of my dog treats in them and who knows what else we'll round up for them. This is an awesome promotional opportunity for anyone that makes their own stuff. We want it to be a box of entirely home made items. If you're interested in donating you just need to be willing to send in a minimum of 20 samples. Feel free to contact me at: stylinpuppillows@yahoo.com for any questions you have or more information you need.

I am super excited about this and can't wait to get started!

Dog collars

I have just jumped into making some collars too. I want them to be cute and affordable for all you pet lovers out there. I've only got a few made up right now as I am juggling a fifteen month old and the daily responsibilites of being a military wife and a stay at home mom. Check the ones I have done so far out and let me know what you think.

I'll be completing some leashes soon too!

Dog beds!

I have two dogs who inspired me so much I decided to take their accessories into my own hands. I looked everywhere for a cute, affordable dog bed for my canine kids to sleep on. All of the cute ones were barely under $100!! Plus, I am quite OCD in keeping my house clean and I needed a way to keep their beds hair-free. Most dog beds are made with cedar chips inside and when you wash them it pretty much destroys the bed.

And so, my business idea was born! I make cute, affordable dog beds for that special pup in your life. They are made with removable covers so they can be thrown into the washer and kept clean. The pillow inserts are also made to be washed just in case it needs to be.

I make three different sizes and am happy to make extra large ones for all those dogs with more to love. I also designed the beds so it is easy to order extra covers to spice things up and keep their bed in style.

I can also make waterproof beds or ones with blankets attached. Just let me know what you're shopping for!

So, check out my myspace for some pictures and all the fabric I have in stock:

Or, check out my Etsy store for all the beds I have currently ready to go and to order one of your own:
